Antonio Banderas Still Calls His Ex-Stepdaughter Dakota Johnson His ‘Daughter’ Despite Being Divorced From Her Mother

In both movies and real life, Antonio Banderas has portrayed a hero. He first appeared on the scene in the 1980s, and since then, he has established a reputation as a leading actor, director, producer, and singer in Spain.

The 1996 film “Evita,” the 1998 film “The Mask of Zorro,” the “Spy Kids” series, and Banderas’ portrayal of Puss in Boots in the “Shrek” series and its spin-off movies are just a few of the actor’s most well-known performances.

In 1992, he was able to obtain a role in “The Mambo Kings,” which received positive reviews. In 1993, he costarred with Tom Hanks in the movie “Philadelphia,” which helped him achieve new heights. When they had pivotal roles in “Evita,” an adaption of the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, Madonna and Banderas were reunited.

The Spanish actor wed Ana Leza in the late 1980s, and they finally got divorced in 1996. He later wed Melanie Griffith, who was his co-star in the movie “Two Much,” at that time.

Dakota and Alexander were among the children that Griffith already had from her prior marriages to Don Johnson and Steven Bauer.

Dakota’s life was drastically improved when Banderas entered it as her stepfather. He supported her through her worst moments. More significantly, the two have demonstrated that having a family doesn’t always need being connected.

However, the pair separated in 2015 and announced their divorce, claiming “irreconcilable disagreements” as the cause. They assured everyone that they did so “in a loving and kind manner.”

Banderas was frequently referred to by Dakota as his “bonus dad.” Even after Banderas and Griffith divorced, the two remained inseparable as father and daughter.

On the set of “Two Much,” Banderas had the opportunity to get to know Griffith, who would later become his second wife and who also starred in the movie as his leading woman. They eventually became romantically involved and wed in London in May 1996.

Banderas greeted Griffith, who already kids Dakota and Alexander, with open arms. Stella, Griffith and Banderas’ daughter, was ultimately born in the same year.

Banderas’ stepchildren started to regard him as a second father as he integrated into the family. They even gave him a sweet moniker, “Paponio,” which is a combination of the names “Papi” and “Antonio,” according to People Magazine.

But after 20 years of marriage, Banderas and Griffith split in 2015. The actor maintained a tight relationship with his stepchildren, notably Dakota, despite this setback.

Dakota has frequently voiced his affection and adoration for Banderas. Dakota was the one who gave Banderas the Best Actor award at the 2019 Hollywood Film Awards for “Pain and Glory.”

“I was really fortunate to come from a home where marriage was common. I received a bonus father, who I later discovered was actually one of the most significant figures in my life “Dakota fessed up.

When I was six years old, my mother wed a guy who added one amazingly magical young sister to our home along with an unbelievably bright light, a whole new universe of creativity and culture.

Dakota was happy to remember how the actor had taught her the essentials of life and acting, and she was thrilled to be giving the award to his stepfather.

“I learned about genuine enthusiasm and discipline from Antonio. To get to the heart of something he had grown interested in or a part he was preparing, he would spend hours and sometimes days at his office “She gushed.
Dakota learned that she genuinely had acting skills thanks to Banderas. Dakota made her acting debut in the 1999 movie “Crazy in Alabama,” which was directed by Banderas and starring Griffith. It just required a few lines, but Dakota was so determined to get it perfect that she even hired an acting coach to help her practice.

It wasn’t the first time, according to Entertainment Online, that Dakota got to spend quality time with his father on the set. Banderas was collaborating with Madonna on “Evita” as the singer was delivering an Easter basket to the pop icon’s door.

“My daughter, whom I adore. I’ve been touring the world with her on my shoulders “Despite the formality of it all, Banderas thought warmly of her step-daughter, whom he treats as his own daughter.

Even though he is no longer dating the actress, Banderas cherishes his friendship with Griffith and their mixed family.

He told Vulture, “I recall those years as really effervescent and really wonderful.

“Melanie and I are no longer married, but she still belongs to my family. She is most likely one of my closest friends, if not my closest friend overall. Dakota, young Estella, and Alexander are members of my family present.”

Banderas has been blissfully dating Nicole Kimpel after his divorce with Griffith, demonstrating that love is stronger than limitations, expectations, and even challenges.

The pair celebrated their eighth anniversary in May 2022, and Banderas said in an Instagram post that they are “enjoying every second of it.”

The actor revealed to Toronto.com in 2015 that they had no intentions to get married or have children because he needs the security that his relationship with Kimpel provides.
