Not everyone is fortunate enough to find a love that endures forever. But every now and again, we read tales that renew our trust in marriage as an institution as well as in love.
This couple remained united under the most trying conditions conceivable, and they are still going strong today.
When Zechariah and Shama’a got married, they were still quite young. When they got married—a tradition that was widespread in their culture at the time—they were both, respectively, 12 and 10. They had to get married young since they were both orphans. And once they did get married, they strengthened one another.
During the early years of their marriage, the pair cleaned a donkey barn where they were living in Yemen. Later, when they were in their 20s, they were able to immigrate to Israel and start over. One of the first Yemeni Jewish couples, it is reported, to have emigrated to Israel after its founding.
Together, the couple produced 11 children, and they currently have 64 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The 91-year-old pair has been married and has experienced everything together. They are both over 100 years old and have a few straightforward life lessons under their belts.
They attribute their long-lasting relationship to the fact that they were meant to be together and were fortunate enough to meet young in life.
The pair is quite proud of themselves for having a long-lasting, “fight-free” relationship. Despite having a very difficult beginning to life as a whole, they were able to create a great existence with one other.
People all around the world are inspired by their love for one another and their ability to preserve a marriage for so long and with such a great amount of passion for one another. Their narrative of resiliency and love is touching people’s hearts.
